Who Killed The Children?

Who Killed The Children?

My day started with the horrifying headlines of the death of 3 small school children burnt to death when their LPG based school van caught fire. The same tragedy left 8 other small children aged between 5 and 9 with serious burns. Rukayya, 5, suffered 95% burns. Their school van was illegally fitted with LPG. No doubt to make an extra buck for the owner who used it as a private school van to ferry 12 children to school. These…

I am waiting for book 10 of the Dresden series, Small Favor due out in hardcover on April 1st, 2008. Redirect System.out.println() to Log4J

Redirect System.out.println() to Log4J

A couple of days ago I was struggling with a 3rd party API. Didn’t have access to the source code and the library was dumping out debug messages to the console via System.out.println(). I prefer Log4J and I was having a hard time figuring out which message from my logs corresponded to messages from the 3rd party API. Anyway, I ended up writing a small Java class to redirect all SOP output to my Log4J setup. Works like a charm…

Amazing Homework (UKG, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Public School, Hyderabad)

Amazing Homework (UKG, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Public School, Hyderabad)

I was amazed at this kid’s work. Mitul studies in UKG (2007 – 2008) at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Public School, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. I remember Bablu, my son, brining back the same homework just before Durga Puja in Oct 2007. And I also remember that his efforts were a far cry from Mitul’s 🙂 Mitul’s homework was posted just outside the room of the Primary Section Supervisor.

No Time To Stand And Stare

No Time To Stand And Stare

The famous peom by William Henry Davis was taught to Mamli, my 8 year old daughter, in her English class at school. As homework they were asked to add two more lines to the peom. Mamli’s efforts were judged the best in the class and her project was displayed on the class notice board. I took this picture when I went to meet her teachers and collect her report card after the mid term exams. The last two lines were…

The View From My office (Oracle, Hyderabad)

The View From My office (Oracle, Hyderabad)

I recently moved into the Oracle Campus at Madhapur from our leased Raheja Mind Space office. I have a cabin on the 4th floor at the front of the building. Not a corner room. Not yet 🙂 I can see the Dell building across the street and they dominate my view 🙁 In the evenings the landing flights roar directly overhead as we are right in the landing flight path. I notice them only in the evenings. Maybe because there…

TOI on Mobile – Alas, No Indian Express Yet

TOI on Mobile – Alas, No Indian Express Yet

Over the last half decade, The Times of India has been on the forefront of technology use. A few days ago I stumbled across their TOI Mobile service and was suitably impressed. I immediately went searching for a similar service for The Indian Express but sadly was not able to locate any. I use MobiPocket Reader to pull the main Indian Express stories via their RSS feeds and then have MobiPocket synchronize with my Sony Ericsson P1i. This works well…
